Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Pour in crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and tomato paste.
  5. Add oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, black pepper, and sugar.
  6. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Stir in fresh basil and balsamic vinegar, then remove from heat.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving over pasta or using in other dishes.
