Preheat your smoker to 225°F.
Form the ground beef into 4 equal-sized patties. Make a small indentation in the center of each to prevent puffing.
Season both sides of the patties with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Place the patties directly on the smoker grate and smoke for 60–90 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 135°F for medium doneness.
If adding cheese, place it on top during the last 10 minutes of smoking.
Toast hamburger buns if desired.
Assemble burgers with your favorite toppings and serve immediately.
