Ingredients

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in hot water (batter will be thin). Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool for 10 minutes in pans, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting or ganache before serving.
