Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 8 slices sandwich bread
  • 8 slices cheddar cheese
  • Softened butter, for spreading

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until soft, about 3–4 minutes.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess grease.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and ketchup. Simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices butter-side-down in a skillet over medium heat.
  5. Top each with 1 slice of cheese, a scoop of sloppy joe mixture, another slice of cheese, and a second bread slice, butter-side-up.
  6. Cook until golden brown and cheese melts, about 2–3 minutes per side. Serve hot.
